Nowadays it feels like everything is “on the cloud” and that’s mostly because so much is. Cloud-based solutions are increasingly popular and will continue to be in the future. We all know the value of securing our personal and business systems against online threats, but it is easy to forget about security for our little piece of the cloud. Here are four major issues that can threaten the security of your cloud that you should be aware of.
Targeted Data
Certain types of data are more valuable to hackers and cybercriminals than other types. Data like medical records and credit records have much more value as something to sell or use maliciously and therefore present a more tempting target. If your business is in an industry, like medicine or banking, that tracks and stores this type of information, it could make you and your cloud storage a more tempting target as well.
Malware
Malware is an unfortunately common and dangerous software issue for businesses today, and your cloud storage is not exempt. Typically malware infects cloud storage through a “Malware injection” where the dangerous code is disguised as valid code so it slips through the firewalls – the computer version of a spy in your ranks. And this code does spy, it can monitor conversations, track emails, and even interact with files, stealing or changing information.
Breach
The cloud is still pretty young, and because of this, it is not fully secure. This makes it a prime target for digital thieves. Research shows that companies that only use cloud-based storage, without any physical backup, are more likely to be affected by data breaches. You should be protecting your cloud from a data breach just like you would protect your network from a data breach, including educating employees and encrypting your data.
Data Loss
Catastrophic data loss is the biggest potential issue with cloud-based storage. This could be the result of human error by you or your employees, a weather-related event that damages the physical servers of your cloud storage, or a targeted attack. Either way, if you don’t have a backup of your data somewhere, it is gone and you are responsible. Any data that is your responsibility should be safely and securely backed up, and never stored solely on the cloud.
