Beware of Hackers: What Do Doxing and Baiting Mean?

As technology is continually changing, the methods that hackers and criminals use to attack is always adapting as well.

As a business owner, you need to be constantly vigilant of the threats your business can face, from the physical to the digital. For many, understanding the range and possibilities of digital threats is challenging. As technology is continually changing, the methods that hackers and criminals use to attack is always adapting as well. It’s essential that you keep up to date with the industry to know how to avoid the risks.

Doxing

Some hackers and even well-meaning but poorly informed professionals can put you at serious risk. Doxing is an unusual form of attack where an individual posts private information, including addresses, phone numbers, or other personal private information to public forums. This is usually done in order to allow for the threat of physical violence. While some hackers may do this on purpose, it can happen on accident. FedEx, for instance, recently came under scrutiny for posting customer addresses on twitter while attempting to help locate packages.

Baiting

Baiting is a unique attempt at attacks and is most often targeted at those who are naive or inattentive. This form of attack usually takes the guise of a lost USB drive left in an inconspicuous location. This can be done in the attempt that someone will mix it in with their own belongings on accident, or that someone’s curiosity will get the better of them. When someone plugs one of the USB’s in, it will allow it to infect the device with whatever method the hacker chooses. This can enable them to not only access information, but they can then remotely destroy their target. Part of what makes this threat so tricky is that it blends the elements of physical and digital threats. The best way to prevent this is to ensure that anyone using your devices is adequately trained and aware of digital security.
